Patrick Moore
Recipient of the James D. Strachan Award for Craft
Patrick Moore’s pioneering efforts in disseminating the UNESCO-listed knowledge of stereotomy, a specialized carpentry technique known as “Art Du Trait,” has significantly impacted North American practices in carpentry, timber framing, joinery, millwork, architecture and historical craft. His understanding of stereotomy has advanced heritage conservation initiatives both in North America and internationally.
Pat is the first and only individual from the English-speaking world to attain such a high-level expertise, introducing this specialized technique to North America in 2014. He addressed a significant knowledge gap by offering comprehensive courses in English and has reached over 500 students through workshops across North America and globally, and over 175 students through online courses. Pat’s impact extends beyond education. His students have made significant contributions to the field and impacted international competitions. His collaborations have elevated stereotomy globally, resulting in curricula and training development initiatives in Canada and the US.
Pat’s collaborations with global organizations have revived interest in this ancient craft, leading to significant contributions in heritage conservation. His leadership within Ottawa-area Amor Construction and his role in high-profile projects, like the Centre Block Rehabilitation on Parliament Hill, underscore his exceptional commitment and expertise in the field.
