Bardawill Victorian Restoration
Nominee for Peter Stokes Restoration Award – Large Scale
In 1994, Andrew Nelson and his late wife, Christine, fell in love with this beautiful 1870 Ontario farmhouse built of white clapboard. Simple in design, it is rich in heritage details, such as the arched window in the peaked gable and the front door flanked by sidelights, with a transom light above. The recently refurbished verandah has a complicated history. Initially a full-width verandah (1881 Fire Insurance Plan), but 1918 it had been reduced to a short-width porch. Over time, it underwent multiple alterations before being restored to its original width in 1991. Despite careful maintenance however, the verandah eventually deteriorated. The project included the replacement of elements of the deck boards, some of the railings and posts of the upper railing, and the existing porch posts. The restoration ensures that this historic house will continue to delight passersby for decades to come.
