Nominee for Paul Oberman Award for Adaptive Reuse – Small Scale

Meaford’s historic downtown is currently undergoing significant urban renewal with a new Community Improvement Plan approved by Council in 2026 to guide new development, infrastructure upgrades, and revitalization of Market Square into a year-round civic space.

The revitalization of the old Meaford Fire Hall on Market Square is proof of concept that adaptive reuse of Meaford’s heritage buildings will play a central role in the renewal of its commercial core. Centrally located beside the Old Town Hall that has been adaptively reused as a concert hall and backing onto Market Square, Station 87 is an inspiration for others to see the potential of Meaford’s heritage buildings as unique destinations for the local community and beyond.

Historic photos and artifacts associated with the Meaford fire department are displayed throughout the restaurant to commemorate its former use and historic importance to the community. Informed by the local heritage community, these interpretive features create a tangible connection with the past.  The restaurant name ‘Station 87’ references the year 1887 when the Old Fire Hall was built. Through private investment and community involvement, this iconic local landmark has been reimagined as a newly cherished place that continues to be a powerful source of civic pride.
