Mark Tovey PhD
Nominee for the Eric Arthur Lifetime Achievement Award
Mark Tovey was a cornerstone of London’s heritage community, and his passing has left a deep ache among all who worked with him. His impact is visible across the city: he wrote many of London’s heritage signs, including those for The Village, Blackfriars Mill, and Hellmuth Boys College, helping residents connect with the stories behind familiar places.
As Curator of the Cronyn Observatory, Mark designed three period rooms and led countless exhibitions that brought local history to life. He also shared his knowledge as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Western University and contributed to Hear, Here London, amplifying community voices through place‑based storytelling.
At Eldon House, Mark served for years on the Board of Directors and delighted audiences by portraying John Harris at public events. He was also a dedicated advocate for London’s built heritage and an active member of the St. George‑Grosvenor Association.
Mark’s contributions were wide‑ranging, but his influence was quiet, steady, and deeply felt. He gave generously of his time, his talent, and his passion. London’s heritage community will feel the loss of his presence—and the strength of his legacy—for many years to come.
