The Legacy Beacon
Nominee for an ACO Public Education and Engagement Award
The Legacy Beacon turns Windsor’s riverfront into a place where history feels close enough to touch. At its centre stands Streetcar 351—once deteriorating in storage, now brought back to life through a meticulous, years‑long restoration that revived its original craftsmanship with extraordinary precision. Every wood panel, brass fitting, and mechanical detail was repaired or recreated with the care normally reserved for museum‑grade artifacts, ensuring the streetcar is not just displayed, but truly preserved.
What makes the project exceptional is how this painstaking restoration becomes a catalyst for public learning. The Beacon’s open, welcoming design invites people to encounter the streetcar unexpectedly—during a walk, a bike ride, or a family outing—and discover the story behind it. Clear, engaging interpretation connects visitors to Windsor’s early electric transit system, the workers who built it, and the city it helped shape.
The Legacy Beacon doesn’t simply showcase a restored vehicle. It transforms a once‑forgotten piece of Ontario’s heritage into a living educational experience that sparks curiosity, pride, and conversation. It stands out because it proves that when restoration is done with care and purpose, it can inspire an entire community to see its history in a new light.
