Paul Mullins
Nominated for the A.K. Sculthorpe Award for Advocacy

For years, the Francophone community, under the banner of “Save Our Sanctuaries,” fought to preserve St. Joachim Roman Catholic Church and the neighboring Annunciation Church in Pointe Aux Roches. These churches were designated under the OHA in 2007, offering hope that they would remain at the heart of their communities with new purposes. However, in December 2023, the Pointe Aux Roches church lost its designation and a demolition permit was issued. With demolition beginning immediately, the community had no time to rally. Determined to save their own church, the people of St. Joachim knew they needed swift action and sought the leadership of Paul Mullins—the devoted advocate who had tirelessly fought to preserve Our Lady of Assumption Church in Windsor.
Paul’s efforts have been pivotal in strengthening the foundation of 927 St. Joachim and securing the historic St. Joachim Roman Catholic Church, a landmark built in 1881. His expertise in restoring Our Lady of Assumption has provided invaluable guidance, assisting volunteers in shaping long-term sustainability for the group. Whether through advice on organizational development, fundraising strategies, or municipal advocacy, Paul has played a vital role in preserving the church and helping move forward the plan to transform it into a community space for classes, celebrations, and artistic endeavors.
Beyond his direct contributions, Paul’s work embodies a belief in the power of collective action, inspiring all those involved. His leadership resonates with the members of 927 St. Joachim, many of whom are descendants of those who built the church. Paul’s dedication to educating the public was evident at the well-attended 2024 open house, where he proudly shared the artistry and stories behind this historic structure.
