Constructed in 1929, Honourable W.C. Kennedy Collegiate Institute represents the most significant academic English Gothic Revival structure in Windsor-Essex. Designed by Cameron and Ralston Architects, the school’s exterior showcases remarkable architectural forms and detailing including precast stone, brick masonry, leaded windows and exterior wood doors. Led by J.P. Thomson Architects Ltd. in association with ERA Architects, the historic façade and masonry rehabilitation of the school was accomplished through an acute sensitivity to historic building practices.
Due to a deteriorating façade showing evidence of moisture infiltration, an analysis from parapet to foundation was completed. The findings included moisture issues at roofing and parapet locations, cracking at tracery and precast stone components, leaded window failures and general degradation. The cantilevered window surrounds which project massive stone forms over the front entry prompted the School Board to address the façade to ensure its survival and to eliminate any safety concerns. Where precast stone had failed in any way, the pieces were shipped off site to be re-cast. The replacements were specified to match in detailing, profile, form, material, colour, texture, and finish.
Throughout the complete removal of the façade, the original steel, concrete and masonry back-up structure was exposed and accessed for structural integrity. All removed precast stone was placed in front of the school and was affectionately known by the school community as the Kennedy Graveyard. Following the examination of the original façade, existing and replacement precast was re-installed to original locations. Replicas of the original leaded glass windows and wood doors completed the historic revitalization of the façade, allowing Hon. W.C. Kennedy Collegiate to live on as an architectural marvel for another century of education and inspiration.
